Exploring Worship in Rural CommunitiesA PhD Research Project Please see the note below from Mykayla Turner, a PhD student at Saint Paul University in Ottawa:
Dear Parish of the Valley,
Hello! My name is Mykayla Turner, and I am studying Christian worship as a PhD student at Saint Paul University. This fall, I am working on a project that explores what makes worship in a rural community unique from other places. I have spoken with Rev. Matthew and arranged to partner with the Parish of the Valley for this project. Specifically, I will be visiting Holy Trinity Church (Pembroke) and St. George's Church (South Alice) this fall to participate in liturgies and conduct interviews with approximately four congregants from each church. More details will be shared with each congregant before their interview, but for now, rest assured that participation in this project is completely voluntary and anonymous.
Through this research, I hope to draw a comparison between worship in a larger rural town/city (Pembroke) and worship in a smaller more dispersed rural community (South Alice). If the project goes well this fall, I may also visit St. John the Evangelist Church (Eganville) in the winter months to add a "rural village” church experience to my data.
My interest in this project comes from my own experience of growing up on a country property in southern Ontario, surrounded by villages and small towns, and then moving to an urban area to complete post-secondary education and realizing that my rural upbringing was shaping my perspective on worship in important ways. Thank you for welcoming me to the Parish of the Valley this fall. I look forward to worshipping with you!
