Orange Shirt SundaySunday, September 26th September 30th is the newly proclaimed National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Often known as Orange Shirt Day, this day came about because of Phyllis' story. Phyllis was six years old when she was taken to the mission school. Her grandmother had bought her a brand new orange shirt for school, but when she got to school, it was taken away from her. Since then, the colour orange has always reminded her of how no one cared how she felt. (To read more about Phyllis' story, click here. To learn more about Orange Shirt Day, see the Orange Shirt Day website.) And so, on September 30th we wear orange to show that Indigenous Children do matter, to witness to the stories of survivors of Residential Schools, and to commit ourselves to reconciliation. In the Anglican Church, we are committed to ongoing work towards reconciliation and as a symbol of that, we often wear orange on a Sunday close to September 30th. This year, we encourage all those who have orange to wear it to church on Sunday, September 26th. |
Happenings Around the ParishLay Reader Licensed and Commissioned at St Paul's Cobden! Though she has been leading Morning Prayer at St Paul's Cobden for a number of years, parishioner Thérèse Narbonne had not yet been made an officially Licensed Lay Reader. In consultation with the Diocesan Warden of Lay Readers and our Incumbent, Bishop Michael Bird, Thérèse spent some time over the summer fulfilling the requirments to become officially licensed. Last Sunday, September 12th, during the service at St Paul's, Bishop Michael commissioned Thérèse and presented her with her license from Bishop Shane. We are so pleased to welcome Thérèse as a Licensed Lay Reader for the Parish of the Valley. Thank you, Thérèse for your ministry! You will be able to read more about Thérèse's commissioning in the next issue of Revelations. You can read here to learn more about Licensed Lay Readers in the Diocese of Ottawa. |

Canon Susan Clifford if you are planning to attend and she will make sure you are connected with the diocesan group. Barbara Brown Taylor is an Episcopal Priest and Professor of Theology. She lives on a working farm with her husband in rural Georgia. An Altar in the World is a beautifully written book helping us discover the sacred in the small things we do and see every day of our life. From the Introduction: "I have no idea what you will see when you look at your life--but if you are tired of arguing about religion, tired of reading about spirituality, tired of talk-talk-talking about things that matter without doing a single thing that matters yourself, then the pages that follow are dedicated to you. My hope is that reading them will help you recognize ... some of the altars in this world--ordinary-looking places where human beings have met and may continue to meet up with the divine..." |
